Early battles showed Washington’s problems. His army was easily defeated in the battle of New York. Then Washington thought of a plan. On Christmas night in 1776, his soldiers attacked the enemy in the city of Trenton, New Jersey. The British soldiers never expected an attack on such a night. They were having a Christmas party. But some (8) believe it s more fundamental than that. They think we are genetically programmed to take risks. The (9) is that some humans actually need to take risks to function (10) in the world. В задании имеется одно лишнее предложение. A It is currently, extremely dangerous to attempt to clone a human. B The controversy is certain to continue. C It looked like human cloning was becoming a reality. D There could be numerous drawbacks to human cloning. E Most people do not understand what cloning really means. F Cloning is almost certain to continue because it can t be stopped. G According to scientists, the cloning of humans could have medical benefits. H The DNA of a cloned cell is identical to the DNA of another cell. To clone or not to clone? That is the question. Eileen Peters explores the issues behind the cloning controversy. O H What exactly is cloning? According to the Human Genetics Advisory Commission, cloning is defined as producing a cell or organism with the same nuclear genome as another cell or organism. Basically, that means that a clone is a living being with exactly the same DNA as another living being. At the time of writing, some mammals have successfully been cloned, but humans have not. 1 Although frogs were first successfully cloned in the 1950s, it was not until the mid-1990s that cloning became a major political issue. This was when Dolly the sheep became the first successfully cloned adult mammal. Suddenly, it seemed that the cloning of humans had gone out of the realm of science fiction and was close to becoming scientific fact. Some people were extremely excited by this prospect. Others were extremely worried. 2 So, why are some scientists so keen to clone human cells? First of all, it s important to understand that cloning human cells does not necessarily mean that you make a new human being. Scientists believe that in the future we will be able to clone human organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys which we ll be able to use in transplant operations. They also think that cloning will help us get rid of genetic diseases and will allow infertile couples to have children. 3 However, most scientists are against human cloning at present because they argue it is not safe. It took 272 attempts before the cloning of Dolly, and even she did not enjoy good health. At present, we do not have technology to safely clone humans. But what if we are able to solve the safety issues? Will human cloning be acceptable then? Many politicians and religious leaders say no. Анапа

3 4 There are both political and ethical arguments against human cloning. Some religious groups say that cloning would allow us to play God: to determine the sex, the eye colour, even the height of our children. They say this is morally wrong. Others argue that clones will suffer severe psychological problems when they learn they have been cloned, and may suffer prejudice and intolerance from non-cloned humans. Cloning could also produce a black market for embryos. 6 Whatever happens, one thing is sure. This issue is not going to go away. Scientists such as Severino Antinori and Panagiotis Zavos are not going to give up trying to develop safe human cloning techniques. And religious organizations such as the Roman Catholic Church will continue to argue that the cloning of humans is morally indefensible. 5 So what can we expect to happen in the future? Most Western governments are in the process of legislating against human cloning. However, unless all the countries of the world make human cloning illegal (which is highly unlikely), we are likely to see more and more attempts at human cloning in the near future. It is too early to say how successful they will be. Анапа

Аудиотекст

We are going to spend Christmas with my aunt’s family. My father says that I’ll enjoy it and that I’ll meet my cousin Nick Brawn there. I’ve never seen him but my father often tells me about him. Nick is as old as I am – he is eleven. His birthday is very soon – on New Year’s Day.

Nick is American and he was born in America but then his family moved to Britain. Now they live in London.

I want to give Nick a book of stories about sport as a birthday present. My father says he loves basketball and plays football very well. Nick has two brothers and they often play football together. Nick also loves animals and he takes a good care of his dog and his parrot. He wants to have a cat, too, but his Mum is against it.

Nick does very well at school. He likes Literature and History but his favourite subject is English.

Jim: I say, Cathy, how about Sarah’s party on Saturday? We all are going to be there. Are you coming too?

Cathy: I wish I could, Jim. But we are moving the house this Saturday and I need to help my family with all that stuff.

Jim: You are moving! Where to? Is it far from here?

Cathy: No, not really. And fortunately I won’t have to change school. There’s another school much closer to our new home, and my parents wanted to put me there at first, but I didn’t agree. It’ll take me a bit longer to get to my old school in the morning, but I’ll stay with my old friends.

Jim: Great! And what’s your new home look like?

Cathy: Well, the first thing – it’s bigger. And I’ll have a room of my own there. Great, isn’t it! I’ve always been sharing a room with my sister. It’s not bad, and we get along quite well together, but it’s not like having your own place! I’m already thinking about how I’m going to decorate my room to make it look nice and cozy.

Jim: I see what you mean. It’s nice to have a place of your own. If you want to be left alone, you can just close the door.

Cathy: Right. And mum promised to put new furniture in my room. I need to choose what I want and then we’ll discuss where we can buy it. If it’s not very expensive, of course.

Jim: Have you chosen anything yet?

Cathy: Not yet. I want every piece in my room to match the other and it’s not easy, you know.

Jim: You should probably draw your new room and furnish it on the paper. Just like a project design. It can also be done on computer. You can try different furniture styles, different accessories and colours. And then you can experiment and then decide which variant you like better.

Cathy: Sounds like a good idea. And can you help me to make the project design on the computer? I’m not skilled enough for that.

Jim: Sure, I can. Cathy, if you need any help with moving the house, let me know. I’m very skilled in packing things and in moving furniture too.

Cathy: But you were going to Sarah’s party this Saturday…

Jim: It’s not my biggest priority. As far as you are not going to be there anyway…

Cathy: Thanks, Jim. We’d all appreciate it if you could come on Saturday and help us with moving.

A. Safe solutions are still needed
B. International efforts to stop pollution
C. Science for nature protection
D. Set to protect nature.
E. Air pollution in the chain of global destruction.
F. We are all elements of global ecosystem.

1. People have lived on our planet for many years. We may live on different continents and in different countries, but we all depend on our planet, on the sun, on animals and plants around us. We must take care of Earth but not destruct wildlife. Many species of animals and birds are disappearing nowadays. We cut down trees to make furniture, but we forget that people can’t live without trees and plants. Every little creature or thing oh Earth plays its own part and makes our home unique.

2. One of the biggest eco problems is pollution. The main reason of pollution is rubbish Most of our rubbish goes to big holes in the ground, called ’dumps’. But dumps are very dangerous for our life, because they are full of rats, which can carry infections away from dumps. Another way to get rid of rubbish is to burn it. But the fires make poisons, which go into the air and pollute it. This is the propel scientists should get interested in. Such researchers are worth spending money on.

3. The Royal Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (the RSPCA) tries to protect animals from bad use. It operates big nation campaigns aimed at lost pets and circus animals. The World Wildlife Fund (The WWF) rescued several species of animals mammals as well as birds. These organizations also helped to create more than 25C National parks. Greenpeace began its work 20 years ago from saving whales. And now Greenpeace is a world-famous organization, which saves plants, animals and people.

4. Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons ol dust and harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vast forests are cut down and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of lakes and rivers dry up. The pollution of air and the world destruction of the ozone layer is the result of man’s careless interaction with nature, a sign of ecological crises.

5. Numerous conferences have been held to discuss questions of ecologically pool regions including the Aral Sea, the South Urals, Kuzbass, Donbass, Seiriipalatsinsfc and Chernobyl. An international environmental research center has been set up on Lake Baikal. Scientists are also doing much to preserve the environment. But these are only the initial steps that must be carried forward to protect not only for the sake of the present but for the future generations.

One of the greatest advances in modern technology has been the invention of computers. They help us, fascinate us and occasionally scare us. The latest fear concerns children and computers. Some experts claim that brothers and sisters are starting to play more with computers than with one another, and that computers are distancing children from their parents.

Walking round a toyshop you find a home computer game to satisfy any child"s violent imagination. Adult computer addicts are familiar figures: pale people who sit in front of green screens hour after hour. That is their choice. But the idea of a child living in front of a flashing green screen is somehow less acceptable. Canadian child psychologist Jams-Norton explains: These are children with few friends, afraid of making conversation. They are children who are usually allowed to do what they want. They cannot concentrate for long periods of time except in front of the screen. If the computer games they play are violent," she adds, "they become indifferent to violence faster than they would through watching violent videos."

A frightening picture starts to appear. Jams-Norton sees a good number of troubled children. They usually persuade their parents to buy them a computer by saying it "will help their education." Computers, after all, are a central part of education today. Some educationalists enthusiastically look forward to the day when every child will have a personal computer in the class room and the class teacher will be nothing but a technician. That is not particularly appealing either, although with the current lack of teachers someone may soon decide it makes good economic sense. Janis-Norton disapproves of such an attitude, it is relationships with the teacher and the other pupils that make you learn."

We may be at a sort of crossroads. It is a question of whether we use the machines wisely or stupidly in bringing up children. "The computer," says the child psychologist, "is only a surface problem but the real problem is not computers. It is parents who have forgotten how to be parents, or don"t have the confidence. I wish they"d start noticing and worrying about what is happening a bit sooner.

1 . People are worried that children"s dependence on computers may result in

  1. serious learning difficulties.
  2. serious problems with health.
  3. families having communication problems.
  4. permanent anxieties.

2 . The idea of computer-dependent adults is acceptable because

Helen was a very successful businesswoman. She had always liked nice clothes, and when she had left school she had gone and worked in a shop which sold them, not far from her home. After a few experiments she showed that she was very successful at designing the sorts of things that women want to buy, so after a few years the owner of the shop, who was an oldish lady, offered to make her a partner. «It"s something I should have done long ago,» she told Helen with a smile.

Helen was very pleased, of course, and when the old lady retired, Helen bought her share and became the sole owner of the shop. Now she had her independence.

Ever since she had started in the shop she had had to travel around to see what attractive things her rivals in the clothes trade were producing, to attend fashion shows and so on. She had always stayed at small cheap hotels, because she dared not spend too much money when she was saving up to buy a shop of her own.

But when she at last became the owner of the shop, and it was making good profits, she found that she had plenty of money, and she felt she should now stay in the best hotels whenever she traveled. Then the people who buy good clothes can see that your business is successful," she said to herself, "and therefore more of them think they should buy the clothes you make."

So when she had to go to the next fashion show, which was in Rome, she stayed at a very good hotel. She bad a nice big room with beautiful furniture in which she could entertain customers, and there were also fine public room where she could, with her great pride; hold small fashion shows of her own. The room service was excellent, and so was the dining-room, which had a band every evening for dancing. Helen had never before dared to stay in such a splendid place.

She could see from the bills she signed for everything that the prices in the hotel were high, but she was rather surprised when just before she left, she was given a bill of several pages, written on beautiful headed paper.

THE WANDERING SHIP.

In the old days when ships crossed the seas and oceans under sails, every trip was an adventure. In 1872 an American ship was crossing the Atlantic from New York to Portugal. It was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when Captain Moorhouse saw another ship. He knew the ship. It was the “Marie Celeste” which he had seen some weeks before when it was leaving New York. The captain of the “Marie Celeste”, Briggs, had taken his wife and his two-years-old daughter on the trip.

Soon captain Moorhouse saw that something was wrong on the “Marie Celeste”. He sailed his ship nearer the “ Marie Celeste”. Captain Moorhouse and his sailors could see that there was nobody on the “Marie Celeste”. The captain and some of his men went to the ship in a boat. But they found nobody there. Everybody had left the ship. But why had they done so? There were no

signs of a fight. Everything was in its place. Why had all the people left a good ship in the middle of the Atlantic and disappeared ? That is the question which many people have tried to answer since that time. But nobody will know the answer. No man who had left the “Marie Celeste” was seen again.

Captain Moorhouse and his men saw no signs of panic on the ship. Captain Brigg`s watch lay on his table. There was a letter near it which somebody had just begun to write. The ship` s papers had gone, but the log was here. In some of the men` s boxes there was money. The most interesting thing was the fact that somebody had taken away a piece of planking . But why?

Some people thought that the sailors had killed the captain and his family and gone away in a boat. But there were no signs of a fight. Other people thought that many of the sailors had been ill and had died. Then the others left the ship and went away in a boat. But nobody knows the true story of the “Marie Celeste”
